UPDATE: This article is not actual any more. Please go to http://wiki.winamp.com/wiki/SHOUTcast_Authhash_Management to get more information. Thanks!

After waiting several months for the SHOUTcast Authentication Key (SHOUTcast Auth Hash) it has finally been approved for everybody. Everyone of you is now able to register an to create his/her own Authentication Key.

But what is the function of it?

Several weeks ago, the YP, which had an age of more than 10 years, had been programmed completely new. The intention of that was to ensure that the new register cannot list radio stations which manipulated or changed their figures all the time. Moreover the problem of losing the ID while disconnecting from the server caused that the saving of the listen.pls data of SHOUTcast was useless. In future every web radio and all of its servers need an Authentication Key to be listed in the register. Using an Authentication Key makes it possible to pool MP3 and ACC+ streams with a different bitrate. Now you can find web radios right away with several bitrates and that allows you to decide which bitrate you would like to use. (e.g. 128kbps generates to much traffic).

And how do I get the SHOUTcast Authentication Key?

At first you need to click here to create your own account. You get the opportunity to enter with your Google, Facebook, Yahoo or AOL account. If you do not own an account of one of the four platforms, you have to create one. After that you can apply one or more web radios. For each channel you need just one Authentication Key and you are able to use them for all of your relay servers. I illustrated for you, what it can look like:

SHOUTcast Authentication Key

I would like to recommend to you to activate “Make my primary server private” for do not having your relay server listed in the register and not having it public because otherwise listeners are able to connect to it. Now you just need to fill the Captcha out and then you get your Authentication Key which you can use for your sc_serv 2 server in future.

Much fun with creating your SHOUTcast account!

By the way: Based on several difficulties for broadcaster with using sc_trans 2 and sc_serv 2 , I decided to get together with the team of SHOUTcast and one of my acquaintances to create a tool for broadcaster, which shall help them to work with the latest attainments. The tool named SHOUTcast Interface DNAS 2.0 is going to be available in a few days. Stay tuned!

Last year in September, it happened: The ten year old website of SHOUTcast.com had been relaunched.  And today? Today it happened again! Since today’s night, the website of SHOUTcast has a new design with several new functions.

Like it had been announced a few days ago, SHOUTcast had announced a couple of changes for the future. In addition to the announced topics, now there is following a bit more information:

The problems with genres are solved

Since today, the problem with genres has been a thing of the past! The problems, particularly in reference to “Elec tronic OR Techno/Dance, seem to be a thing of the past. Can you confirm that? At our stations, it is convenient again…

New design

The design changed pretty much. At present, you can compare the old website in German with the latest website in English. The older version was quite dark, but that finally changed. I like the site in white more than in black. Additionally there is not as much advertisement on the site as before. The genres are taking place  on the left site again and are extended, if you choose a main genre. The navigation for listeners is easier now. Moreover there are some new menu items on top.

Toolbar player

Another novelty is the toolbar player, which can be loaded at the bottom of the site. Until now you were only able to open the link via Winamp or any other web player. Nowadays you can load the player immediately on the page.

Settings

Among other things, you get the opportunity to choose the way of tuning in via changing your own settings. Whether you like to use a toolbar player, Winamp or the web player, which is new, too – everything can be set. Just take a look! In addition to that you are able to set your own speed in order to get the most suitable bitrate!

Wiki

Like already said before, there will be a Wiki coming soon. The site can already be reached, but there is not much content right now.

Download SHOUTcast 2.0

From this day forward, the older version of sc_serv and sc_trans cannot be downloaded anymore, only the current BETA versions.  You can still find the download for sc_serv 2 BETA 1 and sc_trans BETA 6.

Authorization hashes

In a few days, you can register as a broadcaster in order to get an own authorization hash for SHOUTcast 2.0, which protects you from server hijacking. I think, I am going to make an article about that public.

We come to an end now. By the way, there are just a few days left for you to take part in our raffle, to win a Squeezebox Touch from Logitech.

Jul 17

It’s going to change! Some of you might have noticed that during the last days, in reference to SHOUTcast.

A week and some days ago, the eleven year old software of YP Directory changed over to a completely new system. Eleven years? That’s definitely ancient…fore sure! And according to that, many web radio carriers are wondering about not being listed on SHOUTcast anymore. Moreover there are several changes, which I have compiled for you.

Current listing problems

For web radio carriers, who are not listed anymore: The team of SHOUTcast is paying attention and the problem is going to resolve itself, thus, you don’t have to go in for that because the software engineers are informed.

New rules for genres

Maybe some of you noticed that the chosen genres are not identical to the established ones, in reference to the SHOUTcast server. Yes, there is some change here. For a few days now, only some genres have been allowed to be listed in the SHOUTcast register. In the past, many unknown genres had been used and the register became confusing. We aim for an easy way for listeners to find their own, suitable web radio. In the past you had been able to list five different genres for being listed in five different registers, to get a lot of listeners. Now there is only the possibility to choose three genres for each radio, to make it easier for listeners to know, what is hiding behind the name of the radio. In the future, you have to decide, whether you want to list one main genre or three sub genres. Some web radio carriers are not happy about that solution, I know. But if you think about the comfortable feeling for listeners, you see that it was the right decision. Here you get a list about every possible genre.

Real-time search & coming soon

Soon there will be the possibility to find currently played tracks and to tune them in directly at the radio stations (not with a delay because of the directory tester anymore). Additionally, it should be possible in future to announce tracks, which are going to be played the next time via coming soon lists. Let’s give an example: If I want to listen to a song of Michael Jackson, I can switch to a radio, which is going to play a song of Michael Jackson during the next minutes. Using sc_serv and sc_trans 2.0 is required.

Bottom bar player

While surfing SHOUTcast.com, you will be able to listen to web radios and to search for other radio stations or genres. Everything while working with only one window.

Popup player for your own website

In the near future, you will be able to include the SHOUTcast Flash Player on your website. Therefore, you do not have to program your own player necessarily.

Suggestions and featured stations

Now there will be other radio stations suggested, which are conform to whatever your music taste is like. Moreover there will be editorially emphasized radio stations, which are advertised by the team of SHOUTcast.

Better sorting

In future, you will not only sort on the basis of one thing, but additionally on the basis of many different things at the same time. For instance by means of genres, figure of listeners or bitrate. Now you are able to filter <128kbps out, as an example.

SHOUTcast Wiki for radio carriers

The often criticized readme data file of sc_serv and sc_trans are going to be a thing of the past.  There are still going to exist readme data files but in general, the support for radio carriers shall be enlarged, with help of a Wiki, in which everything is going to be explained.

Port 80 streaming

Many times requested and soon possible: In the near future you will be able to stream via port 80 and that with several channels at the same time. It is becoming true because of the new Mountpoints!

Improved security

Not many of you know about the lacks in security, which are existing. I don’t want to define that any further. But with our new version, these problems should be a thing of the past. In addition to that, SHOUTcast was fixing the problem of fakes. Since the new YP has been used, it is more difficult for radios to induct their untrue figure of listeners in our register. Thanks for that!

UTF-8 and other letters

One problem in the past was letters like “äöü”. This has to end and soon everyone will see what there should be and no cryptic signs anymore.

Following you will see a screenshot of the latest website of SHOUTcast after their relaunch. Soon this will be on your screen, too!

We come to an end for now, but I will keep you informed, because there is some change finally!

Feb 23

About 2 years ago I posted my first announcement for SHOUTcast 2.0. Now, nearly 2 years ago they released the very first beta version of the new SHOUTcast Server version sc_serv 2 Beta v.01, also named as SHOUTcast DNAS 2!

We are currently testing the version and will update this post very soon to get you updated on the new SHOUTcast software. If you have any questions, just ask!

Here you can download new sc_serv 2 BETA v0.1 (SHOUTcast DNAS 2)!

By the way: The SHOUTcast team also released a new version of sc_trans 2 BETA 6

Presenting the first Beta point-release of what will be the next-generation of SC_SERV SHOUTcast DNAS broadcasting server! This drop is the result of the SHOUTcast broadcasting community’s list of feature requirements over the years.

The goal of SC_SERV2 is to provide enhanced serving features and access to the new yp2 infrastructure (in development)
while maintaining as much backward compatibility with the previous sc_serv as possible.

Release Notes:

1) Serve multiple streams from a single server instance
2) Relay multiple streams from a single server instance
3) Multiplex all server activity through a single IP port.
4) Shoutcast 2 wire protocol support for sources, relays and clients
5) Repackaging of Shoutcast 1 and Shoutcast 2 data as appropriate for the connecting client(s)
6) yp2 infrastructure support

To take advantage of these new features you will also need the following:

1) sc_trans version V2 B38 or higher: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=317229

2) authorization hashes (register as a broadcaster in the new infrastructure and you will be issued the necessary hashes) – COMING SOON!

sc_serv must be configured to use the yp2 infrastructure to take advantage of the multiplexing and multiple stream support. The original yp interface had no means of
expressing multiple streams from a single port.

The yp2 interface is still in development and will be released soon! Stay tuned for updates.

If you are going to connect multiple sc_trans instances to sc_serv, you must use the Shoutcast2 protocol.
The original Shoutcast protocol had no means of specifying a stream ID. Clients connecting to the
server do not need Shoutcast2 support, since sc_serv will repackage the stream data and metadata for them as appropriate.

Since the SHOUTcast Team released the very first BETA of sc_serv 2 today, they also released sc_trans 2 BETA 6.

The 6th version of the SHOUTcast Transcoder 2 became many changes which I will post very soon to this blog. Will keep you informed in the next days!

Here you can download sc_trans 2 BETA 6!

Here are the first infos of the new version. Next are following the next days!

Release Notes :: 2/3/2010 – sc_trans drop 6 version 2 revision 39

NEW STUFF:

- A new type of event as been added to the calendaring system that allows you to relay other stations. (see calendarxml.txt for more information)

- You can now create your playlists dynamically in real time. A new playlist entry construct will allow the invocation of an external program to fetch the next playlist entry (see docs.txt section 10)

- You can change the way your metadata is displayed in clients (this comes with lots of caveats though). See the new displaymetadatapattern conf file option (docs.txt)

- In order to encode your stream in mp3, you need an MP3 license key. This is a legal requirement to comply with all broadcasting laws. You can grab the code and pay the $5 license fee here:http://gc.digitalriver.com/store/winamp/en_US/pd/productID.165220700

- The conf file values unlockkeyname and unlockkeycode have been added to suport the MP3 broadcasting key.

- /writeconfig command added to web API. This will force the state of sc_trans to be written to the conf file (before it was only being done with sc_trans exited. See docs.txt)

- /timeshift command added to web API. This is very experimental and was added for the “We Choose The Moon” project at AOL. It allows extremely crude time shifting of the stream. (see docs.txt)

BUG FIXES:

- Shoutcast2 protocol changed for compatibility with sc_serv2

- Network timing fudgefactor defaults are now zero for compatibility with sc_serv2

- Special files always transfered on reconnect for uvox 2.1

- Fixed problem parsing conf file, where last line was missed if there was no cr/lf at end of file

- An empty main playlist will no longer cause the application to abort. It will just sit their quietly, mumbling to itself.

- VU Meter failure after internal restart fixed

- Better error reporting for shoutcast 1 protocol

- Unix warnings about missing priority playlist directory are now debug level warnings

- DJ data should be correctly escaped now.

- In adding the relay feature it was necessary to rewrite a large portion of the metadata handling. Hopefully the metadata will now change more reliably when switching between scheduled sources.

- Update title request had bad HTTP header line (how did I get away with that for so long)?

The SHOUTcast TTSL Stats are refreshed monthly. TTSL Stats are generelly used to detect, whether the own figures were improved or not.

Especially during the winter season, the figures of radios are increasing enormously, because people like to be at home and infront of the computer, instead of being outside in the cold. As a result of that, it is not astonishing that radios reach higher peaks at present.

But when I had a look at the figures of the TTSL Archive of November 2009, December 2009 and January 2010, which are listed in the TTSL Archive, one thing is very conspicuous:

The Tune-In figures of all radios had increased in December enormously!

In November for instance, HOT 108 JAMZ had been tuned in for 10 million times, but in December for over 46 million times! That is an increase of over 460 % – that would be great!

In November, 5 million listeners were listening to RauteMusik.FM Goldies, but in December, there were 57 million listeners! Well, that is an increase of 1100 %!

Certainly it woul be appreciating, if the topic “web radios” enjoys such a great popularity within one month, but that cannot be possible. I was wondering about a reason for such an increase…

It is obvious, that actually only the radios were increasing so enormous, which are listed on top of the list of the most famous genres, because they are in a function of a precursor!

HOT 108 JAMZ for instance, is the leading radio for the genre “HipHop”.
RauteMusik.FM Goldies is also the leader of a genre: Oldies!
Additionally, .977 The Hitz Channel is the number one, if you are looking for the genre “Pop” and that already for several years.

But what happened? SHOUTcast had been programming the Flash Player lately and this one is now often appearing in the results of a search engine.

I assume, that already the note of the name of the radio on the Flash Player’s display is enough, to be counted as a TuneIn. Another possibility could be, that the Flash Player is checking again for itself, whether the radio is still functioning or not, to stop the query for old servers. By now, I am still not sure, what it is, that causes these increases.

But to believe, that your radios are well-established and got such a popularity would be a nice thinking, right? I’m sorry for disappointing you with that. ;)

If there are any further news, maybe even from the SHOUTcast Team, I will pass it on to you!

A few days ago, the SHOUTcast Blog changed its domain and had been relaunched completely.

The new SHOUTcast Blog includes the same subject areas as before. Topics are the global music news and web radios are introduced. In addition to that, users will be confronted with special styles of music. Moreover, there had been interviews with radio owners and these interviews will be a topic further on.

If there are going to appear other topics in future, I am not aware of yet. But I will pass on the news to you!

The SHOUTcast Blog can be entered here.

From now on, there is a SHOUTcast Shop existing, where you can buy merchandise of the most popular streaming software of the world.

Currently you can buy the following products:

SHOUTcast Baseball Cap
SHOUTcast Mousepad
SHOUTcast Long Sleeve
SHOUTcast Tasse
SHOUTcast Aufkleber
SHOUTcast T-Shirts
SHOUTcast Krawatten
SHOUTcast Skateboard
SHOUTcast Anstecker

Unfortunately the shop opened as recently as today. I ordered a Winamp T-Shirt several weeks ago. It has been manufactured perfectly and it fits, but the design is not a favor to me and I am more interested in SHOUTcast in general.

The prices are acceptable, especially considering the Dollar conversion rate. The only problem is, that you have to order in USA and the dispatch costs a lot more than if you order in Germany.

Nevertheless, just take a look and perhaps you will find something for yourself!

Here you get to the official SHOUTcast Shop! (click graphic!)

Today the team of SHOUTcast presented the new SHOUTcast Flash Player mini.

Starting from now, you do not get the download of the listen.pls file of every streamserver if you click “Tune In” but it appears a Popup with an included Flash Player.

On the one hand it is just a trend to listen to web radios via web player, because YouTube & Co. are using all that via Flash very successfully and you do not have to own an external media player.

On the other hand you are still able to load the TuneIn links with using a common media player like WinAmp. You can choose what you desire! If you have cookies activated, you can see what you were listening to at last.

Here you get the latest news of the SHOUTcast team:

Thats right SHOUTcast Users!

We’ve implemented a new major update to SHOUTcast.com that will allow you to listen to any of the thousands of radio stations in the SHOUTcast directory through a mini pop up player. However, note that you can still choose to continue to listen to SHOUTcast stations through your preferred media player, such as WinAmp, iTunes or Windows Media Player.

To Try Out our New Pop Up Player

Simply click on the “Tune In” link next to any station in the SHOUTcast directory. From there, the pop up player will show up with play, stop, volume controls as well as the SHOUTcast directory underneath the player for easy browsing. *NOTE: The miniplayer requires the latest version of Adobe Flash. Also, the miniplayer only supports stations that stream in MP3 – due to some known-issues with streaming AAC+ content in Adobe Flash.

To Keep Listening Using Your Favorite Media Player

Clicking on it will pop up the settings window (below). Here, you can choose to use the SHOUTcast Radio Mini Player or switch to using your regular Default Media Player (such as Winamp, Windows Media or iTunes).

Please provide your feedback / comments / suggestions – we love hearing from you!

If you have suggestions or just want to give a feedback – do it! I will pass it on!

Release Notes:
12/10/2008 – sc_trans beta drop 4 – Version 2 revision 21

NEW PORTS:
FreeBSD
Mac PPC
Mac Intel

Audio capture is now functional under Win32,linux and FreeBSD, but does
not yet work on the Mac ports.

AJAX API:

sc_trans now has an Ajax API that allows full manipulation of
the program state (See api.rtf)

added flash policy file support referenced by both /crossdomain.xml
against the admin port, and a custom flash policy server which
can be configured using the flashpolicyserverport config option

vu.bin admin port command added to get vu data as a stream (see docs.txt)

SCHEDULING SYSTEM:

Playlists (other than the primary) and DJs can be scheduled in a calendar.
See the Ajax documentation for more info.

NEW DJ SYSTEM:

DJs now have their own accounts in sc_trans. The new scheduling system
can be used to determine when they can connect.

dj archive files are now named with the following format
djname_[date/time based on djfilepattern parameter].suffix

The dj archive file is optional, and is set in the DJ scheduling

REPLAY GAIN CHANGES:

replayGain calculation system redone. Playlists now have RG calculated
against them if you use the calcrg parameter when registering the list
with the AJAX API. Priority playlists and the main playlist still use the config
file flag. Runahead compensation is only done for the main playlist at startup

BUG FIXES:

bug in shoutcast protocol state machine fixed. Connect/disconnect messages
now appear in logs as expected.

reloading main playlist was causing duplicate copies to be inserted into
the internal queue.

CONFIG FILE CHANGES

calendarfile config option
